Why We Love Leggings and Jeggings

by Milana · 38 comments

I recently wrote a post about snake print leggings, but for a while now, leggings in different colours, materials and prints have been a must-have in every woman’s wardrobe. All of a sudden leggings went from being something you would wear at home, not at all, or maybe under a skirt, to being a regular, primary, piece of clothing.

How To Wear Them

Kim Kardashian wearing leggings the wrong way

Personally, I feel that leggings can at times give a sense of an unfinished look. Maybe even provocative.

They accentuate every little shape of your body and are so tight that your curves become very visible – and I mean VERY. Look at this picture of Kim Kardashian sporting a pair of leggings the not so right way!

What I do when I wear leggings, is, I pick a longer shirt that covers my behind slightly. And this goes for every body size out there.

It doesn’t matter if you’re size 0 or 12, you don’t need to show it all. Leggings are stretchy. And stretchy means almost see-through in some cases. The look won’t be sexy, classy or nice. Over-sized or just longer shirts, t-shirts and blouses will give the leggings a more refined look.

Here are some different ways to wear different leggings and  look modern, classy and cool at the same time.

These models look sophisticated, but far from boring and safe. They display a personal style and outfits that can be worn on many different occasions.

Jeggings are the new jeans

Something that I love the same or even more than leggings and jeans are the so called jeggings! They are comfortable, they make your body look slimmer, they fit well as they shape themselves to fit your body, they come in many different colours, with or without pockets. They look like jeans, but to me, they are more comfortable because of the elastane in the material. Unlike regular cotton leggings jeggings do not show every bit of your behind as clearly.

Here are some cool jegging-outfits:

Much better than baggy pants.

Yes, I couldn’t agree more, Susan. In fact no one should own a pair of baggy pants unless they’re baggy sweat pants! :)

Yes leggings have become way popular and I love them!!! They are so comfy and can dress you up nicely when you wear them the right way as you described! Speaking of which, I’m wearing leggings right now! :) I’ll have to check into the jeggings because I don’t think I’ve seen them at the stores I’ve been to… In fact, I hadn’t even heard that word before- Jeggings.

Yes, you should definitely look into the jeggings if you love leggings! They are more formal looking and can be worn with shorter blouses too, but still feel as good as regular leggings. I’ve just bought a pair in grey and I love them!

I love love loooove leggings and jeggings, but I’m getting a bit bored with plain black leggings, especially when it comes to a night out. So I was wondering what I could do to spice up my leggings choices? I really want something interesting like shiny leggings that aren’t just black, but not as out there as the snake print leggings from your Kristen Stewart post… Any good advice? :)
P.S. I really like the black/white/spider web-ish leggings on the top of the page :)

Thank you for your comment, Anna!

I totally understand what you’re saying about leggings when it comes to a night out. Have you tried sequin-leggings? I have a pair from H&M – they go really well with a tunic or a dress. :) Here are some from Asos!

I haven’t tried them actually, but maybe I should. I have been afraid of sequin on leggings, but the ones from Asos are really cool so maybe I’ll give it go. Thank you for you advice :)
Btw, where are the leggings on the top of the page from? They are really cool :)

Yes, those leggings are really really cool – they’re from Neurotica, but they’re sold out! Their collection was so popular that they’re out of stock now! Here are some from Asos that remind me a bit of the ones from Neurotica. They would look great with a short black dress or a black tunic tunic!

Thanks for your comment! Yes a striped dress goes perfectly with leggings! It’s one of my favorite looks! Throw a boyfriend blazer on and you’re good to go!

The shirt is from Asos.com.

I was also wondering if a blazer goes with a long kind of tunic dress. I got this gorgeous grey spotted blazer from New Look today and some long tunic dresses. One is like a sweater and I was wondering if tunic dresses go with blazers? Or is it just short tops that go with blazers?

Tunic dresses are great with blazers – makes the look a lot more edgy and personal! :)

I’m so glad you mentionned that no, leggings are NOT pants, shoudln’t be worn as pants no matter what.

I still think the cutest way of wearing them is under a dress with edgy flats.

And jeggings are the greatest thing since…well, since as far as I can remember. Hurray for jeggings!

Okay, I totally get that leggings aren’t pants, but about jeggings?? What if your top/tunic doesn’t completely cover up your backside?

Reply

Milana August 22, 2010 at 8:07 am

Well, jeggings do look like jeans, but they are super tight, so it’s all about how comfortable you feel, I personally like to wear something a bit longer with jeggings as well, especially if they don’t have pockets on the back. The pockets to me make them look even more like a pair of skinny jeans.

Agreed on the jeggings and on leggings. Another variation besides pattern though is material – I’m currently itching to wear a pair of velvet leggings I just bought, as well as leather-look, suede like and other variations on the cotton theme.

I agree, I think jeggins are a good and comfy replacement of jeans :)

Speaking as a person who generally stays away from trends, I have to say that true denim jeggings are actually very cute and flattering. This being said, jeggings that are more like leggings are horrible, especially the acid/stone-washed versions. Here is another helpful article about jeggings for anybody who is interested: http://gochicorgohome.com/awesome/desperately-seeking-jeggings

Let’s not kid ourselves, wearing leggings as pants works great for girls with the right body. Claiming it’s “not sexy” is like claiming thongs aren’t sexy. Men haven’t suddenly taken a disliking to the female form! They drool over that kind of thing. Not to say it’s particularly classy, but it can be done in non-trashy ways these days. It’s not the 90s anymore.

If you get jeggings, make sure you get the ones with the texture of jeans. They are stretchy and comfy like leggings, and fit like leggings (which is a good thing. I have problems with jeans falling down.) But the demin-type jeggings look more formal, and can be worn as jeans. They look good with any body type. Make sure you get dark wash also!! Express has some nice ones.

My wife let me wear a pair of her leggings around the house about 2 years ago and couldn’t believe clothing could be so comfortable. I wear them in the car if we are going a long trip because jeans are so constrictive and my body aches after 2 hours behind the wheel. I rarely wear them in public but the times I have I don’t see people staring or making comments. I own a few pairs of my own know and wear them all most every day around the house. What are your thoughts about men wearing leggings do you think leggings would ever be a fashion for men?

Females have totally fashion freedom , including uniquely to themselves, cross-dressing or transvestism the last fifty years; what gender bias by both the fashion industry and female’s insatiable thirst for being ” male ” wannabees ! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery “, as they say. Most men are normal and would never be interested in duplicating what ” normal ” or abnormal females crave—transvestism; so females your dresses, skirts and gowns are safe from male competition for that particular style , totally unlike what males have to suffer through by your ” gender-bending “, androgenous, cross-dressing into historical male/ menswear. ” Jeggings ” are pants, historical male garment in most societies for a very long time and denim, a very masuline, manly fabric; so why the confusion as to who should wear the ” Jeggings ” ? Dah !

What about leather leggings. what kind of skirt would look good over them if i was trying for a rockstar look?

Reply

James June 28, 2011 at 10:18 am

If your looking for the rockstar look wearing leather leggings your best to wear without a skirt. A T shirt or tank top with the leggings will give you the look you want.
