How To Wear Velvet

by Jolene - Fashion Columnist

The soft texture, the subtle sheen and the smoldering mystery… Wearing velvet is like being in a romantic relationship with fashion! And like all relationships, there will be good times, there will be complications, but most of all, there will be the zsa-zsa-zsu. Your connection with your clothes is especially important when you’re wearing something attention-commanding like velvet. Because a big part of looking chic comes from feeling chic, here’s how to integrate velvet into your wardrobe like a pro!

Subtly classy

Being safe in fashion is equivalent to being boring in life but there’s a good reason why classics stay classic for decades – they just work! The easiest way to conquer a new trend is to wear it with something familiar, something you know how to work with. Blazers, flats, totes and jeggings have been around and will still be for a while so it’s time to update your favorites with your new favorite fabric!

When in doubt, going head-to-toe velvet may not be the best of ideas. Wearing a pop of velvet on the collars of your jacket will add a pop of visual interest to your outfit. Also, fall’s solid, muted colors compliment the subtle sheen well. The trick is to pick colors you love and know well and trust your instincts. Don’t be afraid to experiment!

Daringly fun

Once you’re more comfortable with velvet and identify what works for you and what doesn’t, have fun with it! Who knows, an unlikely combination such as that of the soft fabric and sequins might just be the punchline to your already fabulous look. Or a simple purse with a trendy skull clasp is just enough attitude you needed to keep that t-shirt and jean routine fresh and updated.

As usual, if you’re going all the way with velvet, or any other outstanding trend, you can avoid looking like a hot mess if you keep the rest of your outfit not understated, but complimentary, not predictable, but simple. As famous philosopher Plato once put it,

Beauty of style and harmony and grace and good rhythm depend on simplicity.”
