I‘ve always been afraid of skirts. What a silly phobia, you say…But there’s always been something telling me to stay away from them. I ride a bike – good for your body and your health, not so good for your skirt. Where I live it can be cold and very windy – not good for you or your skirt (or your hair!!). All those factors have kept me away from skirts for a long time, because I didn’t feel confident and safe.
Now, all of a sudden, skirts have become my latest fashion obsession. What happened was that I met the right skirt. And when you meet it – you’ll know. It makes you look good and even more importantly feel good.
However… A skirt can be your best friend or your worst enemy. It can make you look feminine, stylish, powerful…or messy, stripperish, old-fashioned… The secret is not so much in the skirt as in the rest of your outfit.
Here are some examples of skirts, that won’t make you look like a boring secretary:
So how do you style these great skirts?
- Skirts made of fine fabrics that are very feminine (look left) should be paird up with a less feminine top. I wear full skirts in feminine colours or fine fabrics like silk with a white or black (the coulour and print depend on the skirt) t-shirt tucked in. The look becomes more personal, untraditional and edgy.
- The skirt will naturally become the centre of your outfit – you should therefore choose shoes and accessories that accentuate it. For example pencil or mini skirts (look right) should never be worn with knee high boots. Wear shoe boots like the ones shown below – it will make your look a lot more modern and fun! Big bangles always go nicely with a pencil skirt as it breaks the slim form a bit.

I love wearing skirts! I use to hate them but not anymore! I think the reason for disliking them was that I didn’t want to show off my while legs LOL! But you know what, I learned that it really doesn’t matter! I love them and they can make a girl feel very cute and stylish. :)
Thank you for commenting – yes, exactly! You may have to get used to them and accept that all the insecurities are just in your head. When you do, you’ll see all the power a skirts has when it comes to style… You can become super feminine, rock n’ roll, formal… You name it!
Very true! Speaking of skirts… I went to the Mall today (during the 2 hour break that I have between 2 of my college classes) in search of a backpack, and guess what I came out with? Not a backpack but a pencil skirt! LOL! And a cute blouse… I couldn’t help it, so I still have to shop for a backpack.
*By the way, on my previous comment I misspelled “white” I just noticed…
You’ve got a great point there… Impulsive shopping… :)
What kind of a blouse did you pick out for the pencil skirt?
I’m definitely an impulsive shopper; definitely two words that describe me. I don’t know if that’s actually good but… :)
The blouse I got was just a button up, cute, fitted white blouse with like a pair of small pleats at the bottom. I think it looks very cute and gives it a nice look.
where do you buy the brown ankle boots? I love them!!!
Hey Cate! Thanks for your question! I’m so sorry but I can’t find the brown boots – I wrote the post a while back… But here are some great brown boots that look like those and cost a lot less!
I’ve always been afraid of skirts, until this spring. Now I own about 38 skirts (not exaggerating). Nice article. :)
Haha me too! Once you find out how great skirts are, it’s hard to let them go :)
